“Let’s get it done”: Zelensky and Trump discuss path to peace in Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks earlier today to explore the prospects of peace in Ukraine. Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote that Zelensky “like President Putin, wants to make peace.” He added that he was “hopeful” about the prospects of a meeting between Zelensky and American officials set to be held this Friday in Germany, where the U.S. delegation to the annual Munich Security Conference will be led by Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to cooperation with the U.S. He mentioned that his discussion with Trump had covered the issue of Ukraine’s technological capabilities — including drone production and other modern industries. The two leaders also considered the possibility of a new security and economic partnership.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine wants peace more than anyone and is working with the U.S. on joint steps to stop Russian aggression. “As President Trump said, let's get it done,” Zelensky concluded.

In a second post on Telegram, the Ukrainian president added: “We believe that America's strength is sufficient to pressure Russia and Putin into peace, together with us, together with all our partners.”

Earlier, Trump revealed that he and Putin had agreed to start peace negotiations on Ukraine, writing that both sides seek to end the massive loss of life caused by the war.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that he and Putin agreed to “work together” — including via potential visits to one another’s countries. He also reiterated that their teams would “immediately” begin negotiations, starting with a call to Zelensky to inform him of the development.

Trump assigned Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe to lead the negotiation process.
