U.S. serviceman Taylor Adam Lee has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pass classified information about American Abrams tanks to Russia. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the 22-year-old soldier from Texas stands charged of “attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted export of controlled technical data without a license.”
“The defendant sought to transmit sensitive national defense information to Russia regarding the operation of the M1A2 Abrams, our Nation’s main battle tank,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg. According to the FBI’s investigation, Lee allegedly shared classified information about vulnerabilities in U.S. tanks with an individual he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer. In exchange for the data, the American service member reportedly hoped to obtain Russian citizenship.
According to court documents, Lee is an active-duty service member in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, and holds a top-secret security clearance. Investigators allege that in June 2025, via an online channel, Lee transmitted technical information about the M1A2 Abrams Tank and offered further assistance to Russia. In July, during an in-person meeting, he handed over an SD card containing documents with data related to the M1A2 Abrams and also promised to deliver a piece of hardware contained in the tank. On July 31, he allegedly brought the promised item to a storage unit in El Paso, Texas, then sent a message reading “Mission accomplished” to an individual he believed was working for the Russian government.
Western countries have supplied Abrams Tanks to Ukraine as part of military aid packages intended to assist in Kyiv’s efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression.
