Billionaire Igor Makarov renounces Russian citizenship

The founder and head of the energy company Areti renounced his Russian citizenship, according to a report on the U.S. Forbes website, as highlighted by RBC.

Makarov still holds Cypriot citizenship, which he obtained in exchange for investments in the country.

In 2023, Makarov ranked 57th in the list of Russia's richest people, with a fortune of $2.2 billion. In the global Forbes ranking, he is in 1,368th place. Following the start of the invasion of Ukraine, Makarov was subjected to sanctions by the United Kingdom and Canada.

Makarov is the sixth entrepreneur to renounce Russian citizenship. Others who have made the same decision include Timur Turlov, the founder of the investment company Freedom Finance, Ruben Vardanyan, the founder of the investment company Troika Dialog, Yuri Milner, an investor, Nikolay Storonsky, the founder of the fintech startup Revolut, and Oleg Tinkov, the founder of Tinkoff Bank.
