Alexei Navalny says he shares prison section with convicted murderers

Alexei Navalny, who was transferred a week ago to high-security colony No. 6 in the village of Melekhovo, Vladimir region, said he was sent to the same section as those convicted of murder.

Navalny's Instagram post says this section is completely isolated from the rest of the zone. “A prison inside a prison with a completely insane and nearly unbearable regime,” the politician says.

“The inmates are good. Calm and friendly. When I came in, I immediately thought: murderers. It turned out to be true. Almost all of them killers,” Navalny writes.

According to the politician, his 9-year sentence is the shortest in the section. “Sentences are 13-15 years on average. There are 19- and 20-year sentences as well,” Navalny says.

On March 22 the court sentenced Alexey Navalny to 9 years of strict regime in the “fraud and contempt of court” case. The Lefortovo court session took place right in the penal colony IK2 in Pokrov, where Navalny was serving his sentence in the “Yves Rocher” case. The prosecutor Nadezhda Tikhonova had asked for 13 years in a strict regime penal colony. A day earlier, Vladimir Putin promoted the judge who handled Navalny’s case.

Last week Alexei Navalny was transferred from penal colony No. 2 in Pokrov, where he had been kept since 2021 after his suspended sentence was changed to a custodial one.
