Bellingcat investigator prosecuted in Russia, put on federal wanted list by MIA

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has put Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev on the federal wanted list. His profile suggests he is being wanted for a “criminal offense”, but the nature of his charges remains unclear.

In a conversation with The Insider, Grozev pointed out he did not know his charges: “I didn’t and still don't know what I am being charged with. I don’t think they can prosecute a foreign national under the Criminal Code article on discrediting the armed forces, so they must have come up with something else.”

Last summer, the FSB accused Grozev of helping Ukrainian intelligence services, who were ostensibly planning to hijack a Russian fighter plane. According to Grozev, he was simply “documenting one of the most ridiculous counterintelligence operations of all times”:
